meiosis Flashcards
What are body cells considered?
Somatic cells
Gametes
Are what germ cells turn into and they have half the number of chromosomes a body cell has
Where are germ cells located?
Ovaries and testes
Autosomes
1-22 of the chromosome pairs are autosomes that control the inheritance of characteristics besides the sex-linked ones.
Diploid
cells have 2 copies of every chromosome; body cells
haploid
`cells have 1 copy of every chromosome; gametes
Meiosis
produces haploid cells, takes place at certain times, involved in sexual reproduction
Prophase 1
the nuclear membrane breaks down, spindle fibers begin to form, and homologous chromosomes begin to pair up.
Metaphase 1
the homologous chromosomes align in the middle * each side has chromosomes from both parents*
Anaphase 1
the pairs separate from each other
Telophase 1
spindle fibers disassemble and the cell goes to cytokinesis.
Prophase 2
spindle fibers begin to form
Metaphase 2
chromosomes align in the middle
Anaphase 2
the pairs separate from each other
Telophase 2
nuclear membrane forms around the chromosomes and spindle fibers break apart, the cell goes through cytokineses
