Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is needed for cellular respiration?
Glycolysis
Glycolysis
is an anaerobic process, takes place in the cytoplasm, and makes small amounts of ATP
What are the steps of Glycolysis?
2 ATP molecules are used to split glucose= 4 ATP molecules are produced. 2 NADPH molecules are produced and 2 pyruvates
Krebs cycle
takes place in the mitochondrial matrix. A pyruvate molecule is broken down into 2 carbon molecules and carbon dioxide. CO2 is released as waste. Electrons are transferred from the 2 carbon molecules to NADP to form NADH. then NADH moves to ETC.
What does the Krebs cycle produce?
energy-carrying electrons ( NADH FADH)
Electron transport chain
Uses NADH and FADH to make 38 ATP and produces water as a byproduct when oxygen picks up electrons and hydrogen ions.
