Cell Membrane & Transport Flashcards
What are cell membranes comprised of?
Phospholipid bilayer
Phospholipid bilayer
Made up of a hydrophilic phosphate head and hydrophobic fatty acid tails
Cell membrane function
Controls traffic in/out of the cell, separates living cell from aqueous environment
Transmembrane proteins
Embedded in the cell membrane and creates semipermeable channels
Peripheral proteins
loosely bound to the outside of the membrane examples are identity markers
Integral proteins
across the entire membrane, examples are transport proteins or transmembrane proteins
Components of the cell membrane
cytoskeleton, proteins, cholesterol, lipids
Membrane carbohydrates function
helps with cell-to-cell recognition, organ/tissue development
Simple diffusion
high to low concentration; diffusion of nonpolar hydrophobic
Facilitated diffusion
diffusion through protein channels; high to low
Active transport
Cells might need to move against the concentration gradient; low to high, protein pump & ATP
endocytosis
A form of active transport that moves large particles of a cell from the outside into the cell using vesicles.
exocytosis
contents of a vacuole are released out of the cell
phagocytosis
fuses with lysosomes for digestion
pinocytosis
ingestion of liquid into the cell with the help of lysosomes
