Meiosis Flashcards
Homologous chromosome pairs
Partner chromosomes of similar size and genetic composition, one from the mother and one from the father
Karyotype
A complete diploid set of chromosomes, arranged according to their size, shape and number in homologous pairsm
Mitosis
The division of somatic cells
Process of mitosis
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Meiosis
Takes place during the formation of gametes or spores
Meiosis
- Prophase 1
- Metaphase 1
- Anaphase 1
- Telophase 1
- Prophase 2
- Metaphase 2
- Anaphase 2
- Telophase 2
Prophase
Homologous chromosomes arrange themselves into pairs. Crossing over of chromatids occurs. Nucleus dissolves and spindle fibers develop between the centrioles
Metaphase
Bivalents position at the equator. Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres
Anaphase
Spindle fibers shorten, bringing chromosomes to the poles. Cytokinesis begins
Telophase
Spindle fibers disappear. Nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes. Cytokinesis finishes. Two daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes formed.
Importance of meiosis (2)
- Ensures number of chromosomes remains constant
- Genetic variation
