Diversity of Reproductive Strategies in some animals Flashcards
Reproductive strategies (2)
> r-strategy
> k-strategy
r-strategy
Spend lots of energy making offspring, and less caring for them
k-strategy
Produce fewer offspring, and spend lots of energy on caring for them.
Survivorship curves
Illustrates the number of organisms that survive at different stages of their lifespan
Reproductive strategies (6)
> Courtship > External vs Internal fertilization > Ovipary, Ovovipary and Vivipary > Amniotic egg > Precocial and Altricial development > Parental care
Purpose of Courtship (3)
> Ensures both are ready for mating
Helps identify partners of the same species
Choose suitable partner
Kinds of Courtship (4)
> Visual stimuli
Sound stimuli
Chemical stimuli
Physical movements
External fertilization (3)
- Takes place outside the female’s body.
- Many offspring created
- No energy on caring for the young
Internal fertilization
- Inside the female’s body
Ovipary
When the animals embryo develops in an egg outside the female’s body
Oviparous aquatic
Fertilisation takes place externally in water. Developing embryo is surrounded by a jelly-like layer
Oviparous terrestrial
Fertilisation takes place internally. The embryo develops in an egg
Ovovivipary
The embryo is surrounded by a thin, membranous shell inside the female’s body
Vivipary
The fertilized egg develops into an embryo without the protection of a shell
