Meiosis 1&2 Flashcards
What does meiosis produce?
Gametes for sexual reproduction
What is meiosis?
Cell division that results in the reduction of chromosome number
What happens in prophase 1?
Tetrads forms homologous pairs of chromatids. Chromosomes visible. Crossing over which is exchanging of genes between the homologous pairs.
What’s happens in metaphase 1?
Homologous pairs line up in the middle
What happens in anaphase 1?
Homologous pairs separate. Sister chromatids still attached at the centromere. Tetrads separate.
What happens in telophase 1?
Chromosomes gather at poles
What happens in cytokinesis 1?
Forms two cells
What is the end result of meiosis 1?
2 cells with 23 chromatids (46 chromosomes) = haploid formed
In meiosis 2 what enters?
2 daughter cells
WhT happens in prophase 2?
Same as 1 but NO crossing over
What happens in metaphase 2
Chromosomes (made of 2 sister chromatids ) line up in middle
What happens in anaphase 2?
Sister chromatids are separated and move to poles
What happens telophase 2 & cytokinesis?
Nuclear membrane forms & each cell has 23 chromosomes
What is the end result of meiosis?
Four daughter cells are formed call gametes and each is haploid
