- uric acid-specific enzyme: metabolizes uric acid to allantoin (water soluble so it is excreted in urine)
- only indicated for treatment-resistant gout
- parenteral: every 2 weeks, duration of therapy depends on response
- BBW: severe allergic reactions (25% incidence; must pretreat pt. with corticosteroids and antihistamines)*
