Medication Influence By The Body To The Body Flashcards
Overview of the nervous system
Central nervous system (brain, spinal cord)
Peripheral nervous system (sensory pathways, motor pathways)
Autonomic nervous system
Part of the PNS, controls body’s autonomic or involuntary functions, controls BP, cardiac function, bladder, temperature
Neurochemical transmission
Process of chemical signaling between cells, synthesis of chemical signals, stored in nerve terminal, released from the nerve endings, bound to a receptor
Parasympathetic nervous system
Anatomically and physiologically separate to allow influence of each as needed in the body.
Neural pathways frequently travel together and allow for parasympathetic or sympathetic influence. (Thorax, abdomen, pelvis)
Craniosacral
Originate in cranial and sacral regions
What does stimulation of PNS cause?
Rest and digest influence
Acetylcholine
The neurotransmitter that initiates PNS responses (enables vagal nerve stimulation)
Vagus nerve
Cranial nerve X; decreases the rate and contractility of the heart
What symptoms are caused by the parasympathetic nervous system?
Decreased HR, bronchocontriction, increased GI smooth muscle activity, digestive enzymes, pupillary constriction, salivation, hypotension, urine production
Sympathetic nervous system
Connected with CNS through spinal cord, stimulation causes fight - flight response
Epinephrine, norepinephrine
Thoracolumbar
Originates in thorax and lumbar regions
