Medical Terminology of the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Flashcards
Hypoxaemia
Condition of abnormally low concentration of oxygen in the blood
Hypercapnia
Condition of abnormally high concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood
Hypoventilation
Breathing at an abnormally low rate, increase amount of carbon dioxide in the blood (respiratory acidosis)
Hyperventilation
Breathing at an abnormally high rate, decrease amount of carbon dioxide in the blood (respiratory alkalosis)
Haemoptysis
Symptom of coughing out blood from the lungs or bronchial tubes
Cyanosis
Bluish discoloration of the skin caused by the desaturation of Hb or peripheral vasoconstriction
Acute respiratory failure
Condition where fluid builds up in the air sacs in your lungs, when this happens, the lungs can’t release O2 into the blood and thus organs can’t get O2 to function
Atelectasis
Complete or partial collapse of the entire lung or area, occurs when the alveoli within the lung become deflated or filled with alveolar fluid
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a disease in which there is permanent enlargement of parts of the airways of the lung.
Pneumothorax
A collapsed lung. A pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between your lung and chest wall. This air pushes on the outside of your lung and makes it collapse. Pneumothorax can be a complete lung collapse or a collapse of only a portion of the lung
Pleural effusion
Build up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs.
The pleura are thin membranes that line the lungs and the inside of the chest cavity and act to lubricate and facilitate breathing
Empyema
Collection of pus in the pleural cavity
Dyspnoea
Shortness of breath
