What is informed consent?
When you let the NHS know beforehand whether you plan on donating or keeping your organs (Donor card)
What is presumed consent?
When you haven’t informed the NHS that you want to opt out so they make the presumption you want your organs donated.
What is the new law of consent in Scotland?
They have imposed a new soft-presumed consent system, meaning if the deceased has not expressed a wish in life to opt out, the NHS will take the organs for donation.
What us BSD?
Brain Stem Death - irreversible loss of consciousness and ability to breathe on your own
What is BHD?
Beating Heart Donation - when the donors heart is functioning outside the body while preserved in a special machine for transportation.
What is NBHD?
Non beating heart donation - organs are retrieved and donated after the Donor has had a cardiac death.
Moral issues in Consent?
Personal autonomy, supply, and medical integrity
Moral issues in BHD/NBHD?
Dead Donor rule, personhood (dignity), and respect
