Medical Calculations Flashcards
Dose
The amount measured / amount being given
* ex: mg or mL
Dosage
Amount based on units per weight of animal
* ex: mg/kg
Concentration
The amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
* calculated by manufacturer
* ex: mg/mL
Solution
Mixture of substances
* made by dissolving solids in liquids or liquids in liquids
Solvent
Solution capable of dissolving other substances
Solute
Substances that is dissolved in liquid
Dilution
Reduction of a concentration of a substance
Diluent
Agent that dilutes
Calculate for
Concentration
If given weight (w) and volume (v)
* w divided by v = concentration (w/v)
Percent Solution
Calculations done for specific concentration of solutions
* C1 x V1 = C2 x V2
* C1 = concentration you want
* V1 = volume you have
* C2 = concentration you have
* V2 = volume needed
Concentration when given Percent
1% = 10 mg/mL
Drip Rate
Volume of solution (mL) x drops / mL
* divide total by time (seconds or minutes)
