What is ARPAnet?
the network, designed by the U.S. Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency(ARPA), that enabled researchers to pool computing power and established the cornerstone of what would become the internet’s infrastructure
What is data mining?
the gathering of user data
How does data mining relate to advertising?
companies can use data mining such as search histories, location, browser settings, and video watching, in order to generate targeted advertisements based on this data
What is E-Commerce?
a site that allows customers to comfortably search and pay for things online
Why is E-Commerce important?
it helped make the web more interactive and participatory
What is open-source software?
noncommercial software shared freely and developed collectively on the internet
What is the telecommunications act of 1996?
the sweeping update of the telecommunications law that led to a wave of media consolidation. Subsequently, the FCC eliminated most ownership restrictions on radio
What is the digital divide?
the growing contrast between the “information haves”-those who can afford to purchase a computer and pay for the internet-and the “information have nots”- those who may not be able to afford a computer or pay for internet services
What are the 3 types of screens?
- TV
- Computer
- Hand Held Device
How has third screen media changed the way that we use and produce media?
we moved from push(research & design–>production–>marketing–>need?) to a pull mentality where a feedback loop is created(e.g. we may start with need instead of R & D)
*the audience plays a larger role, which is due to interactivity of 3rd screens
What is the second screen phenomenon?
it is using a 2nd screen while watching TV
What creates the second screen phenomenon?
this phenomenon is created by the 3rd screen, but it’s not about which screen it is
What are the 3 types of convergence?
- media convergence
- economic convergence
- cultural convergence
What is media convergence?
various media converging into digital form/when new technology leads to condensing of mediated content
What is economic convergence?
merging of telecommunication or internet companies with traditional media companies
