Q
How does tissue damage occur in diabetes
A
- consistently elevated plasma glucose leads to glucose oxidation and linkage of glucose to plasma proteins
- results in altered protein function
1
Q
Why do diabetics get dehydrated?
A
- high glucose levels in plasma exceeds renal threshold
- glucose not reabsorbed from renal tubules and appears in urine
- glucose in tubules increases osmotic pressure of the filtrate, increasing the amount if water associated with the urine
- increased urine excretion
2
Q
Origin of high glucose levels in plasma of diabetics
A
- plasma glucose not taken up by tissues because glut 4 not activated
- liver stimulated to activate gluconeogenesis
