Mechanical Action Fuzing(switches) Flashcards
What is the definition of a mechanical fuse
Any mechanical mechanism that is employed in a hazardous device and requires physical action or force to take place in order for the device to function
What is the definition of a mechanism
The means by which an affect is produced or accomplished or the mechanical aspect in other words. Typed by function
What is an organic safety
A designed safety block or pin that comes with the component to prevent initiation action. This is built in the device and general provided by the manufacturer
What is a positive safety
A blocking material pinning or securing the component to positively prevent the final initiating action. This action is generally done forward if the firing pin and behind the primer
What are the 2 switch categories
Maintained contact
Momentary contact
What is the definition of normally open and normally closed switches
The normal state of rest for the switch with no outside influence
What is the definition of safe arm or safe operation switch
A switch which allows for a person to safely set the device and arm it without being there or disturbing the device during the final arming sequence
What is the definition of the arming functioning switch
It is the switch which actually “arms” or activated the device so it is ready to function when triggered
What must be done prior to cutting any trip wire
You must trace both ends of the wire, then find and block the triggering device
Do you ever shoot a switch
No! Shooting a switch may cause the device to function
What is the definition of a mechanical switch
A device changing the course of flow in a circuit or cause a non-electric action to occur so as to function the device
How do barometric switches function
By detecting changes in air pressure or altitude
How does a bi-metal switch function
By detecting changes in ambient temperature
What is a door knob switch
A device that is attached to a door knob and activates when the door knob is turned
What type of switches are used for anti-disturbance or anti-tampering (4)
Mercury switch
Tilt switch
Vibratory switch
Ball switch
What are the 4 types of times delay switches
Mechanical
Chemical
Material fatigue
Other ( Ice, wax, beans etc)
What 2 functions can a time delay be utilized
To function the device
To activate the device
What types of clocks are examples of mechanical delay(3)
Alarm activated
Spring tension
Electric
How does an M-1 chemical time delay pencil function
An ampule of acid is broken in the rear of the device and begins to dissolve the retaining wire until it breaks by material fatigue releasing the firing pin which strikes a primer cap
What soluble substances are used in a soluble clothes pin switch
Wax
Aspirin
Which type of switch is most hazardous for a bomb tech
Anti-disturbance (Mercury, trembler, vapor, vibratory)
What is normally employed in a circuit containing a trembler or vibratory switch to provide an arming delay
A clock or timer safe arm switch
What could prevent a clock from functioning a device
Paint or coating on the hands, lack of power, or forgetting to wind the clock
What is the maximum time delay for a minute hand clock
59 min
