Measuring Health in Populations - Lecture Fifteen Flashcards

Patterns of Disease Globally and Overtime

1
Q

Quantifying the Burden of Disease for mortality or morbidity

A

Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) where 1 DALY = one year of healthy life lost due to premature mortality (Years of Life Lost - YLL) + for people living with a health condition or its consequences (Years Lost due to Disability - YLD)
This measures the gap between a populations current health status and ideal health status

Q

Significance of ageing

A

Morbidity occurs later in life which essentially means; a slower progression from chronic disease to disability, this will also create an increase in milder chronic disease but a decrease in the period of time a person experiences severe disability
Overall this maintains function and improves wellbeing
“Healthy older persons are a resource for their families, communities and the economy.”
