Measuring habits Flashcards
Outcome-devaluation test
Experiment used to determine whether certain behavior is goal-directed or habitual. Consisting of three phases
Phase 1
Instrumental learning phase. Hungry rat is trained to press a lever to obtain food
Phase 2
Outcome devaluation phase. Rat is removed from the box and receives unlimited access to foor pallets in separate cage. Devaluing through satiation
Phase 3
Critical test phase. Rat is returned, if it presses the pedal it is habit behaviour as it anticipates the food pallet which they’re not interested in anymore.
Extinction
After test phase, food pellets are no longer offered when pressing lever. Extinction is quick, but if food is offered you can’t tell the type of behavior
Nominal = with use of reward, but not immediately
Outcome
Goal-directed is seen after moderate training
overtraining leads to insensitivity: habit behavior
Only in the same context, new context shows goal-directed behavior again
