Measurement Scales - Test 3 Flashcards
Nominal or Categorical Scale
Simplest kind of measurement
* Meaningful but usually arbitrary and non-numerical names or categories
GENDER IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A NOMINAL VARIABLE
Numbers can be used as tags or labels, but they do not indicate the quantity
Mutually exclusive and exhaustive labels
Ordinal Scales
Precise numerical properties involving order and ranking
Examples of variables:
* person’s birth-order
* ranking in the dessert-eating contest
mutually exclusive and exhaustive labels
Interval Scales
make use of real numbers designating amounts to reflect relative differences in magnitude (sometimes can take on negative values, like temperatures)
Ratio Scales
Like interval scales with real numbers but they have a true zero point (scales can never take on values less than zero)
