[MCN] - Stages of Labor Flashcards
What is the 1st stage of Labor?
Stage of Dilatation
What are the phases of Dilatation?
Latent Phase
Active Phase
Transition Phase
What phase of Dilatation is this?
- cervical dilatation: 1-4 cm.
- uterine contraction: every 15-30 mins.; 10-30 seconds
- mother is talkative/eager
Latent phase
What phase of Dilatation is this?
- cervical dilatation: 5-7 cm.
- uterine contraction: every 3-5 mins.; 30-60 seconds
- feeling of helplessness; restlessness and anxious as contractions become stronger
Active phase
What phase of Dilatation is this?
- cervical dilatation: 8-10 cm.
- uterine contraction: every 2-3 mins.; 50-90 seconds
- mother is tired, restless, irritable, feels out of control
Transition phase
What is the 2nd stage of Labor?
Stage of Delivery

- cervical dilatation is complete.
- uterine contraction every 2-3 mins; 60-70 seconds
- increase in bloody show
- mother feels the urge to bear down
- crowning
- mother experiences pain, helplessness, panicking, fear of losing control
Stage 2 - Stage of Delivery

- Lochia: red; scant to moderate
- monitor mother: every 15 minutes for 1hr, every 30 minutes for 1hr, every 1-2hrs
- massage uterus to promote contraction and prevent bleeding
