What happens to our arteries as we get older?
As we get older, plaque builds up in our arteries. This causes higher blood pressure.
What do lipoproteins do in arteries?
In arteries, lipoproteins carry around fat and cholesterol.
What are the 4 different lipoproteins?
Chylomicron
VLDL
LDL
HDL
VLDL
Very low density lipoprotein
Carries triglyceride and cholesterol
Delivers triglyceride to cells
LDL
Low density lipoprotein
Carries triglyceride and cholesterol
Delivers cholesterol to cells
HDL
High density lipoprotein
Carries triglyceride and cholesterol
Picks up cholesterol, returns to “bus headquarters” aka the liver
Chylomicron
Originates from the intestines and delivers triglycerides directly from the meal to body cells
Risk factors of coronary artery disease
Cigarette smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia (high LDL; low HDL)
Dietary factors, diabetes, heredity, age, excess body fat, male sex, inactivity
