April 4: Protein - The Versatile Nutrient Flashcards
Essential nutrients
Nutrients we need to survive that either can’t be made by the body or can’t be made in sufficient amounts to stay healthy
What are the 3 basic functions of proteins?
Energy, structure, regulation
Structure: bone, connective tissue
Energy: potential energy in bonds
Regulation: hormones, enzymes, etc.
What is an amino acid made up of?
Amine group, carboxyl group, r group
What does protein digestion produce?
Amino acids
Where does chemical digestion start and end?
It starts in the stomach and ends in the small intestine
What happens to undigested material?
It ends up in your stool
What is protein turnover and what are the implications if you have a protein deficiency?
Protein turnover is when proteins in the body are replaced by new proteins. If protein is deficient, the body must break down existing protein in the body, since it cannot be stored
What happens if your body has excess protein?
It is used for energy or stored as fat
How many of the 20 amino acids are essential?
9
