types of action
traditional - action that is custom or habit
affectual - action that is expressed by an emotional state
value-rational - action towards a goal the person regards as desirable
instrumentally rational - a highly rational form of action where people calculate the most efficient means of achieving a given goal
verstehen
- this is the term given to describe the individual human experience
- another way to think about this is an interpretative or subjective understanding of the relationship between others and the wider social sphere in society
- social facts, the rules and norms we take for granted and know as acceptable, are created by the individuals and not the outside institutes
ideal types
- it is important to point out that in everyday life, a given behaviour or course of conduct is likely to exhibit characteristics of more than one type of social action
- for example, someone may want to work as a nurse as it provides a salary but also because they receive great satisfaction in helping others
- these two categories of social action serve as ideal types
bureaucratic theory
- according to the bureaucratic theory of max weber, such a structure was indispensable in large organisations in structurally performing all tasks by a great number of employees
- in addition, selection and promotion only occur on the basis of technical qualifications , it is argued that the most successful bureaucracies was developed by the nazis during the holocaust
symbolic interactionism
the symbol - people interpret the same symbols in many different ways
the self concept - the looking glass self and developed through thinking about how others see us
game playing and role taking - we actively act out roles, we don’t just passively accept them
the interaction - involves taking on the role of the others, this is complex
