Q

Mixture

A

Two or more elements or compounds that are in the same place but NOT chemically bonded together. This is why air is a mixture. It is composed of oxygen, argon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and methane.

Q

How does reactivity change as you go down group 1?

A

It increases. As the outer most shell of electrons gets further away from the nucleus, the electrostatic attraction gets weaker, meaning that less energy is required to make a reaction occur.

17
Q

How does reactivity change as you go down group 7?

A

It decreases. Group 7 elements have 7 electrons on their outer shell, so during a reaction, they try and gain an electron in order to get a full valence shell, which is harder than losing an electron, which group 1 elements do.

20
Q

Displacement reaction

A

A chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound
