Earth Y7 Flashcards
What is the mnemonic to remember the order of the planets?
My Very Excellent Mother Just Serves Us Nuggets
What is the order of the planets?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What is a satellite?
A satellite is a celestial body orbiting another one
Which planet has a vertical rotation?
Uranus
Which planets are the gas giants?
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (the last four)
Which planets are the rocky planets?
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars (the first four)
Which planet has the thickest atmosphere and what happens because of it?
Venus. The thick atmosphere traps in the heat more effectively.
Which is the biggest planet?
Jupiter
Which is the smallest planet?
Mercury
What are Mars’ moons and how many are there?
Two: Phobos and Deimos
In order from outer to inner, what are the earth’s layers?
The crust, the mantle, the outer core, the inner core
What is a supernova?
A supernova is the implosion of a star
What does the term “spaghettification” refer to?
The horizontal and vertical stretching of when something is being absorbed by a black hole
Why does a black hole have such great gravitational acceleration?
Because when a supernova occurs, so much matter is squeezed into a tiny space. This space is so much smaller, but has the same GFS.
Phases of the moon:
First Quarter
Waxing Gibbous Waxing Crescent
Full moon Earth New Moon
Waning Gibbous Waning Crescent
Last quarter
Can anything escape a black hole?
NO. Not even electromagnetic waves, like light for example can escape.
At what angle does the earth tilt?
23.4°
What does the tilt of the earth have to do with seasons?
At different times of the earth’s orbit around the sun, the earth tilts toward or away from the sun, meaning that at different times the north hemisphere is more or less exposed to the sun.
When does a meteor become a meteorite?
When it reaches the surface of the thing it was orbiting.
Why does the Sun look bigger in comparison to all the stars?
It is the closest star to Earth
What was wrong about what people thought about the solar system a long time ago?
They thought that the Earth was central and didn’t include Uranus or Neptune as they couldn’t see them
Why do things orbit one another?
GRAVITY.
What is the nearest galaxy?
Andromeda
What is this called?
Earth Moon Sun
Solar Eclipse
What is this called?
Moon Earth Sun
Lunar eclipse
What is the name of the day when daylight and night is equal?
The spring and autumn equinox?
What is this?
Earth Moon Sun
This is physically impossible. The moon is in earth’s orbit and therefore can’t be on the other side of the sun in comparison to earth.
