Glassware and other materials should be washed properly with liquid detergent (disinfectant), completely removing culture media residues, chemicals, and biological samples.
What should be done if materials are spilled on the balance?
Any materials spilled on the balance must be cleaned/removed thoroughly.
What is the proper procedure for maintaining a microscope after use?
The microscope must always be wiped clean before putting it away and must be in proper posture after using.
How should a biological safety cabinet be maintained?
The biological safety cabinet must be kept clean and should not be used as storage of media, culture plates, and other materials.
What is the requirement for maintaining a microbiological incubator?
The microbiological incubator must be kept clean and in an orderly state.
What should be stored in refrigerators used in the microbiology laboratory?
Refrigerators are used to store microbiological samples and cultures. Do not store any unnecessary material (i.e., food, drinks, anything other than what will be used in the microbiology laboratory).
The equipment is intended for media preparation only and should not be used for any other purpose (i.e., heating food and drinks). It should be kept clean at all times – any spill or stain must be removed after using.

How should an autoclave be maintained to prevent unwanted bacterial growth?
The autoclave must be cleaned before and after use, and the water should be replaced to completely remove residues of microbiological culture media that may promote unwanted growth of bacteria when the unit is stored for a longer time.
What precaution should be taken with containers of culture media and chemicals after use?
Containers of culture media and chemicals should also be checked and properly sealed after use to maintain the quality or shelf-life.
What should be done with electrical equipment that is not in use?
All electrical equipment that is not in use shall be unplugged from wall sockets before leaving the laboratory.
