What is mastitis?
inflammation of the mammary gland
Define the words: case, new, reoccuring
Case: one quarter infected
New: if 7 days passed since last infection
Reoccuring: if less than 7 days since last infection
What are the phases of mastitis?
Invasion: organisms move in from the environment into ducts and into gland cistern
Infection: organisms multiply, tissue invasion
Inflammation: leucocytes and proteins into glands. clinical signs start
What are the other words for e.coli mastitis?
toxic/coliform
Write a description on subclinical mastitis
No detectable changes in the udder or milk usually seen but microorganisms usually present in the cultures
What are the different diagnostic tests for mastitis?
california mastitis tests: 4-3-2-1, positive strings of gel

Bacterial culture/PCR

> 200,000 cells/ml

- Hygienic teat management
- Identification and treatment
