Farm Biosecurity & AMR Flashcards
Define biosecurity
A set of preventative measures designed to reduce the transmission and exposure to infectious disease
Define bioexclusion
Measures taken to prevent the introduction of disease into a population from outside
Define biocontainment
Measures taken to prevent the spread of disease within a population
How can you reduce disease coming into the herd?
- Closed herd
- Buy as few animals as possible
- Testing animals pre purchase
- Quarantine
How can you reduce disease risks from neighbouring animals?
- Prevent nose to nose contact
- Farm boundaries
- Avoid grazing at the same time
What can you do for susceptible animals in the herd?
- Protect those w immature immune systems
- Reduce stress
- Preventative medicines where possible
- Prevent immuno-compromising conditions
What is antimicrobial resistance?
The ability of an organism to survive and grow in the presence of an antimicrobial organism usually sufficient to kill it
What is intrinsic resistance?
- Occurs naturally in particular species
- Chromosomally encoded
- Not reflective of AM usage
What is acquired resistance?
-Mutation in DNA of target genes
What are the 4 potential mechanisms of AMR?
- Drug inactivation/modification
- Alteration of the antibiotic target site
- Alteration of the metabolic pathways
- Reduced drug accumulation
What is prophylactic treatment?
Treating used to prevent a disease from occurring
What are some measures to reduce AM use?
- Client education
- Infection control
- Vaccines
- Biosecurity
