What would you do under Rule 19?

A

MGN 369
Rule 19 requires that there is no stand on vessel and all participants are required to take appropriate avoiding action.

You could alter to port or starboard, but I always go starboard if unsure.

A

I would do nothing as this vessel is going the same course and speed, thus there is no risk of collision!

Wha would you expect your OOW to do on entering Restricted visibility?

A

As per MGN 315 and STCW
He should comply with the relevant rules and do the following:
• Sound of fog signals
• Proceed at a safe speed
• Have engines ready for immediate manoeuvre
As well as:
• Inform the master
• Post extra lookouts
• Exhibit nav lights
• Operation of radar and systematic plotting if detected objects.

What would you do in this situation under Rule 19?

A

d i) states that we should avoid an alteration of course to port for a vessel forward if the beam, other than for a vessel being over taken;

Therefore I can go to port or starboard, but in this situation I would go to port to show I understand I am overtaking!

A

ROC with vessel 2 and he is abaft my beam, therefore I should avoid an alteration of course towards him!

Vessel 1 I am over taking and there is no risk of collision therefore I would alter to port.

A

My heading marker and my true vector do not match therefore it is ground stabilised!

Restricted Vis:

You hear apparently forward if the beam the fog signal of a vessel not on the radar! What are your actions?

A

I would:

  1. Reduce my speed
  2. If necessary take all way off
  3. Navigate with extreme caution until danger of collision is over!
  4. Change fog signal to 2 prolonged blasts at intervals not exceeding 2 mins.

Shall avoid alteration to port for vessel fwd of the beam!
Shall avoid alteration towards a vessel a beam or abaft the beam!

Therefore I would slow down.

A

ROC with both vessels.

Vessel 1 is forward of my beam and I am overtaking there for I can alter to port or starboard!

Vessel 2 is abaft my beam and therefore I shall avoid an alteration of course towards a vessel Abeam or abaft my beam.

Therefore I would alter to port.

A

Vessels 2, 3 and 4 are not ROC!

Vessel 1 is ROC, but I am over taking therefore I can alter to port.
