What is the mass media?
- It collectivity of sources
- Mean of communication that reach a board audience

-The media has the right to scrutinize government and public offal’s.
What was the ruling of New York Times vs. Nixon?
-The public right to know is more important than national security
What was the intentions of the 1st amendment?
-Allow for political freedom of speech
What types of speech are not protected by the 1st Amendment?
- obscenity
- slander
- “fighting words”
What are considered “fighting words”
-Speech that might create an engagement and cause public danger
What can the mass media be analogous to?
-A market place that sells different media outlets
What is the process that the media agenda sets?
- Emphasis: One side of a story rather than others
- Editing: Time and budget allow for only partial of the story to be told
- Selection: Decide what stories to focus on and what not to focus on
What is prior restraint?
-The government cannot restrain media from publishing government information
What is priming?
-Media focus attention to certain issues that has an affect on political decision.
What is framing?
-The position or angle the story takes on.

-A politician strategically planting information to media in order to engage public opinion.
