marxist perspective-Willis Flashcards
what was Willis’ study
he studied 12 boys in wc area in the midlands in a participant observation study
what did he find about the ‘lads’
-rejected the values of the school
-were hostile to the ‘ear’ ‘oles’ who were more likely to be from mc backgrounds
-saw little point in schoolwork when they expected to take manual labouring jobs
-saw manual jobs as proper work based on traditional working-class masculinity and middle-class jobs as ‘pen -pushing’
-were sexist(looking down on women) + racist(looked down on ethnic minorities
willis disagreed with Bowles and Gintis why?
argued school is not very successful at socialising children into being obedient, as ‘the lads’ he studies were an anti-school subculture = rejected everything the school stood for
what were the ‘ads’ subculture focused on?
focused on masculinity - willis found they viewed both working hard in school + white-collar jobs as effeminate
