Marx & Engels & Communitarians Flashcards
What is Marx objection to liberalism
liberal rights of security, equality, property, and liberty encourage us to view others as limitations on our own freedom, they encourage feelings of separation and isolation
What are Marx’s two distinct forms of emancipation
political emancipation and human emancipation.
Political Emancipation
only the way for citizens to get rights protected by the state.
human emancipation
enables human beings to gain the access to true freedom which means to live in a classless society and enjoy communal rights.
Why does Engels think Capitalism is wasteful and inefficient
- unemployment (not putting everyone to use)
- overproduction of resources
- consumption creates artificial needs
- exploitation of workers
Why do communitarians disagree with liberalism/individualism
Liberalism focuses on individualism and the rights of individual people, creates isolation of people who solely pursue their own good.
Communitarians argue we are thoroughly social beings, our identities and self-understandings are bound up with the communities in which we are placed
