When can you discharge sewage into the sea?
- Must be comminuted and disinfected using a system approved by the administration
- At a distance >3nm from land
- If not comminuted and disinfected, >12nm from land
- Holding tanks discharged at a moderate at a speed >4 knots
- Shall not produce visible floating solids or discolouration
Compliance with Annex V - Garbage
- All ships irrespective of size
- Placards for ships >12m in size
- Gabage management plan and record book >100GT or carry 15 or more persons
What is contained in the garbage management plan
- Procedures for collecting, processing, storing and disposing of garbage, including the equipment onboard. It should be easy to follow and nominate the person responsible for implementing the plan.
Compliance VI - Air Pollution
- IAPPC including NOx Technical Files
- EIAPPC for every diesel engine onboard
Sulphur Oxides regulations
- Emission control areas require fuel coming onboard is of the appropriate SOx content
- Outside of an ECA = 0.5%
- Inside an ECA = 0.1%
Bilge alarm goes off, what are your actions?
- Determine where the water is coming from. If small leak and has oil:
- Run the oily water separator, discharging freshwater over the side, oil to sludge tank
- Raise a non conformity
- Inform DPA, Flag, Class and Port state
- Return to shore to have repaired
If large leak:
- Seek permission from shore
- Record in ORB and OLB
