What is a steel rule used for?
It’s used for setting gauges and a compass and measure length.
What is a tri square used for?
To mark angles at 90 degrees to the edge of the wood; to check the wood has square corners; to check square components as they are being assembled.

What are card templates used for?
Marking out curved shapes on any material.

A pencil because it won’t mark the surface too deeply.
What is a marking knife and what does the line create do?
A marking knife is a knife used to cut wood fibres before cutting across the grain. The line can be used to stop wood tearing when it is cut and can be used as a ledge for accuracy when cutting.
What is a marking gauge?
A simple tool that scribes lines parallel to a straight edge on timber.
What is a cutting gauge?
A simple tool for scribing lines across the grain so that the wood will not tear when it is cut.
What is a mortise gauge?
A gauge that marks out two parallel lines for marking either side of a joint.
