What is cancer staging?
Process of determining how MUCH cancer is in the body and WHERE it is located
Why is the staging of cancer important?
Because the stage at diagnosis is the most powerful predictor of survival, and txs are often changed based on the stage.
Do screening test for lung cancer improve outcomes?
NO, d/t it being more rapid growing.
What are the 4 major types of lung cancer?
SCLC
NSCLC: SCC, Adenocarcinoma, and LCC
Is SCLC slow or rapid growing?
Rapid growing and aggressive
- once found usually spread
SCLC is almost exclusively found it what type of pts?
Smokers
How does superior vena cava syndrome relate to lung cancer?
Caused by bronchogenic carcinoma or mets to paratracheal nodes
S/sx of a pt with superior vena cava syndrome?
HA, nausea, dizziness, visual changes, syncope, respiratory distress
How do you establish a dx of breast cancer?
Excisional or incisional bx
What are some risk factors for prostate cancer?
Obesity
High fat, low fiber diet
Elevated insulin levels
Dietary supplementation w/ vitamin E
What are the 2 diagnostic tests used for prostate cancer?
DRE + PSA
- repeat in 2 wks, consult, and refer
DRE can detect tumors at what aspect of the prostate?
Posterior and lateral aspect of the prostate gland
What pts do you aggressively screen for cervical cancer?
Sexually active women who still have a cervix
How is cervical cancer detected early?
Pap smear
What vaccine is indicated for both males and females at age 9-26?
Gardasil vaccine (HPV)
