What is management?
The planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of human and other resources to achieve organizational goals effectively and efficiently
Role of Management
- Guide organizations toward goal accomplishment
- Combine and use organizational resources to ensure organizations achieve their purpose
- Encourage individual activities are focused on reaching organizational goals
- Focus on activities or other factors that may get in the way of goal achievement
Advantages of Management by Objectives
- a rewards based system helping employees maximise achievement -
- helps buils relationships between management and employees as they negotiate, communicate and share journey towards achieving goal
Disadvantages of management by objectives
- time consuming process - negotiation phase and review stage involves managers and employees
- goals must be achievable, otherwise this can create unhealthy competition which reduces corporate cultur
Theory X management
manager controls employees, enforces rules. Good for lower level jobs
Theory Y management
manager gives employees responsibility, looks for input. Good for high level jobs
What is leadership?
Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.
laissez-faire leadership
A leadership style that leaves much of the business decision-making to the workforce - a ‘hands off’ approach and the reverse of the autocratic style
autocratic leadership
leadership style that involves making managerial decisions without consulting others
democratic leadership
a leadership style that promotes the active participation of workers in taking decisions
parental leadership
You make the decisions with the welfare of employees in mind
Cotingency theory
- There is no set way to lead it only depends on the internal and external factors
