Mammary Glands And Lactogenisis Flashcards
What is lactogenisis
Milk production
What is galactopoiesis
Maintenance of milk secretion
What hormone stimulates lobule alveolar development
Progesterone
What hormone stimulates the growth of the ductal system
Oestrogen
Describe how milk is ejected?
Suckling triggers and impulse to the hypothalamus
Stimulate posterior pituitary gland to release oxytocin
Cause myoepithelial cells to contract to push milk into gland to cistern
How is milk excretion stopped
When the foetus is weaned they suckle less
So intra-mammary gland pressure increases
Causes increase in FIL which reduces milk synthesis
(Then Positive feedback until milk isn’t synthesised)
Describe the organelle composition of mammary epithelial cells
High mitochondrial density
Lots of Golgi apparatus for protein synthesis
What sugars make up lactose
Glucose + galactose
What organelle synthesise milk fat
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
What organelle synthesise milk protein
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
What is the difference between colostrum and milk
Colostrum has a high milk fat, protein, mineral and vitamin content (+ have more immunoglobulins)
What is the function of prolactin in mammary gland development
Triggers synthesis of mammary epithelium
Increases transcription of Alpha lactalbumin
What is the function of alpha lactalbumin
Maintains synthesis of lactose
