Domestic animal reproduction Flashcards
what is biological efficiency
reproductive efficiency
lactation ability
growth and development
replacement rates
what is progeny
the breeding of descendants
ex) for meat production, replacement breeders or for non breeding reasons
what are the sex chromosomes in male birds
zz
what are the sex chromosomes in female birds
zw
what are secondary sexual characteristics
appearance and behaviour
what is the male reproductive tract called
wolfian tract
what is the female reproductive tract called
mullarian tract
describe how the female reproductive tract develops
supporting cells (ovarian follicles) proliferate to Oocytes (germ cells) which promote follicle development
describe how the male reproductive tract develops
the SRY gene found on the Y chromosomes contains the Testes Determining Factor. This causes sertoli supporting cells to develope into Pre-Sertoli cells which form primitive testes.
This inhibits meiosis, causing prospermatogonia which develope inot immature spermatogonia
how is GnRH secreted into the anterior pituitary gland
from the hypothalamus through the hypothalamo hypophseal portal system
what does GnRH stimulate
luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone to be secreted into the blood stream
how to steroid hormones secreted by gonads affect the hypothalamus
inhibit the release of GnRH
describe GnRH release in males
tonic
describe GnRH release in Females
tonic and surge
