What are the differences between anapsids, synapsids and diapsids?
•Anapsids have no temporal opening in their skulls
•Synapsids have a lateral temporal opening
•Diapsids have a dorsal and lateral temporal opening.
(These are all types of amniotes)
What are the three major clades of extant mammals?
- monotremes
- marsupials
- eutherians.
Define monotremes and give examples.
Egg-laying mammals e.g. Duck-billed platypus.
Define marsupials and give examples.
Pouched mammals e.g. Koalas, kangaroos and wallabies.
Define eutherians and give examples.
Placental mammals e.g. Humans, dogs and Dolphins.
Define adaptive radiation.
An increase in species from a single stem group.
Give features of mammal.
- endotherms
- have vertebrae
- 4 chambered hearts
- skin covered in hair/fur
- mothers produce milk
- young born alive
- up to 4 teeth types
- large brain
- sweat glands.
When did the first true mammals arise?
Triassic.
