The circumference at the mid point between hip and lowest rib- just above umbilicus

Protein= 70% absorbed
Complex carbs= 90%
Refined sugars= 95%
Fat= 98%
What are the Atwater factors?
It uses a single factor for each of the energy-yielding substrates (protein, fat, carbohydrate), regardless of the food in which it is found
What are some strategies to avoid overeating?
Limit distractions whilst eating
Eat slowly
Eat regularly
Eat more dietary fibre and lean protein
Digital tracking
Stay hydrated
Eat breakfast- protein rich

What are different surgical procedures to help patients lose weight?
Lap band (band placed around stomach)
Gastric bypass (food bypasses stomach)
Sleeve gastrectomy (stomach made smaller)
Gastric balloon (silicon balloon placed in stomach)
Endo-barrier gastrointestinal liner (plastic bag so food passes through without being absorbed)
What is gastric bypass surgery?
It is where surgical staples are used to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. The pouch is then connected to your small intestine, missing out (bypassing) the rest of the stomach
What deficiences can be seen in obese people?
55-80% have vit D deficiency
50% have iron deficiency
Vit B12, thiamine (B1) and cholecalciferol (D) seen
Why does pre-operative weight loss need to occur before patients undergo weight loss surgery?
To reduce the size of the liver- when there liver is larger than usual it straddles the stomach
What is the post operative diet in those who undergo weight loss surgery?
Aim to get to maintenance diet by 6 weeks
Diet priorities are for lean protein, dairy products and fluids
About 1200-1500kcal/d
Low in fat, moderate in carbohydrate, high in fluid
Sipping water throughout day- usually lose thirst feeling
Need vitamin supplementation
