Maletzky 2006 Flashcards
Maletzky (2006)
AIMS
The aims of the study world to evaluate offenders who had been assessed for appropriateness of MPA on or before release
The aim was to see the outcomes of being on MPA compared to not being on the treatment
Maletzky (2006)
— Generalisability
the sample contained 275 innmates (m)
of these 134 were recomended MPA and released on parole
(some woldnt get it due to communitys they lived in not having the recorses to provide MPA or a treating therapist or a parole office may not think its nessasary)
of the 134 recomended, 79 received MPA and 55 did not
The study isnt generalisable
this is due to the sample of 275 innmates containing mostly innmates who commited sexual crime and therefore the studys results that MPA reduced recividism cannot be applied to other types of crime such as violent crimes e.g. assult. meaning the study has low generalisability
Maletzky (2006)
High test retest reliability
The study had high test retest reliability, as it had a standardised procedure:
once the 79/275 immates who were recomended to and would be receiving MPA were chosen
They were given a injection if MPA every 2 weeks of a dosage between 200-400mg
questionaires were produced to collect data
data collected included: if a new offence was commited since release, if there was a violation of parole conditions, if a offenderbwas re-arrested and if so was it down to sexual problems and if the offemder was employed or not.
the supervising officer also said wether or not the offender was “doing well”
due to this standardised procedure and standardised questionaire
the study is highly replicable and therefore has high test retest reliability
Maletzky (2006)
high Ecological validity
the study was retrospective and it looked at real paroled MPA injected offenders between 2000-2004
therefore the study took place in real life and the results that MPA reduced recividism is likley to occur in real life and therefore has High ecological validity
Maletzky (2006)
low internal validity
prisoners were receiving anti depresents to combat the side effects of MPA
this could have however effected the effectivness of MPA therefore meaning cause and effect between Mpa and reducing recividism couldnt be accuratly established giving the study low internal validity
Maletzky (2006)
low ethics
the study had low ethics due to the side effects caused by MPA
such as sweats, nighmemares, leg cramps depression and osteopersosis
meaning that both physical and psychological halm was done to the prisoners
breaking ethical guidlines making the study unethical
Maletzky (2006)
conclusion and application
MPA was found to reduce recividismmand reduce sexual drive even though they were summary offences on the medication they tended not to be in sexual nature
An application of the study is that now they have found MPA to work at reducing recividism, they can implement it in more areas to reduce the nuber of those recomended to have it but not receiving it
therefore decreasing their recividism rate
therefore showing how the study’s results can be applied to thurther MPAs effectivness at reducimg recividism
