Anger managment programs as a treatment Flashcards
Anger management programs as a treatment
intro
what is cbt
why use for anger
on crim ? y
how (breif) / what it does / its effects
A cognitive behavioral therapy is a therapy of cognitive thought processes that trigger behaviors
It’s used for anger as anger is a cognitive behavior and so are anger impulses
So we use Cognitive Behavioral therapies such as anger management programs on criminals to control their violent inputs and the teach them to control their violent impulses
• it helps to control anger via coping skills and relaxation techniques
• it also helps to prevent it via cognitive preparation and restructuring ( so patients can think rationaly meaning the anger is never triggered in the first place)
• and skills so criminals with aggressive tendencies can deal with triggering events
Cognitive behavior therapies such as anger management decrease: receividism, frustration, impulses, anger
and increases: relaxation, control, positive thinking and coping
Anger management programs as a treatment
paragraph 1 ao1
reasoning
y do cog behaviour therapy
Cognitive behavior therapy is done on criminals as
anger impulses excist is because of irrational thought processes
so cognitive therapy to help patients to think, deal and control anger in anger triggering situations to make sure they have a rational thought process which eliminates angry responses to the situations

paragraph 1 ao3
studys
Because of the cognitive element of rehabilitation
anger management programmers have been tested and they were effective in studies such as: Ireland 2004 and 2000 which showed that prisoners reduced anger related behaviours
and in Dowden, Blanchette snd Serin 1999
Which found that anger management programs succeeded in reducing recividism in high-risk offenders
However Howes 2005 found no significant difference in anger management program group’s anger related behavior compared to the control group suggesting that it was ineffective
Overall due to more studies stating that it has been effective it’s is effective at reducing recividism and reducing anger-related behaviours

paragraph 2 ao1
step 1
cognative preperation
Step 1 in anger management programs (amp on avg take 10 sessions) is known as cognitive preparation
This involves identifying triggering situations,
identifying the negative consequences of anger and the negative consequences for others involved in the incident
and cognitive restructuring
Which is challenging Fort patterns, thinking what is the Rational way of thinking in this situation. (as criminals anger outbursts are due to irrational thinking)

paragraph 2 Ao3
Hormone therapy compare
ethics and side effects
Compare to hormone therapy cognitive restructuring has no negative side effects
meanwhile CPA has side effects such as liver dysfunction and MPA has side effects such as depression and Nightmares and osteoporosis
However in rare cases Psychopaths will use the emotional manipulation knowledge that they’ve Learned From the anger management program to commit more crimes
The overall due to the negative side effects of Anger Management programs being incredibly rare, anger management programs are better and more ethical in terms of side effects compared to hormone therapy as there is no major side effects to anger management programs meaning that it is incredibly ethical
whereas hormone treatments have side effects such as osteoporosis and leg cramps which are very ethical as they may cause physical harm and pain
Therefore making programs better in terms of side effects and ethics compared to hormone therapy

Paragraph 3 Ao1
skill aquisition
The second stage in the anger management program is skill acquisition
•This involves teaching criminals effective ways of dealing with anger and triggering situations such as breathing exercises and rehearsing thoughts such as “I am not angry”
• coping skills such as avoidance and stop thinking about the triggering situation and anger
• assertiveness training, which is how to control / calm down EG count to 10 or make a CALM point without anger

Paragraph 3 Ao3
Time and Effectivness
Skills help prevent the behavior long term
and therefore the effectiveness of the treatment stays with the offender long-term past the treatment has ended
unlike hormone therapy that affects stop after the treatment ends
Amp effectiveness is based on individual difference for example readiness to take part
and AMP skills could be forgotten
while hormone therapy has a biological effect so the treatment having the desired effect is guaranteed
Overall if AMP is effective on the individual it is better than hormone therapy as it works long term and is more likely to stay effective if it was originally effective so therefore reducing recividism
Hormone therapy is only better if the anger management program does not work originally (as HT works 100% but only short term)
So overall anger management program is better than hormone therapy in terms of effectiveness (as it works and it prevents it from occuring in the furure if it works) and time

paragraph 4 ao1
stage 3
application practice
The final stage of anger management programs is the application practice
which involves role-playing scenarios to practice and the control in a controlled environment this can be done either individually when a group depending on how aggressive the offenders are
This could be done by forensic psychologists or by the probation service
Anger management programs as a treatment
paragraph 4 ao3
effectivness, expence and efficiancy
Anger management program can be expensive to do especially over long periods of time for having to pay for:
the sessions, treatment, learning, role playing comma having protection on standby in case it goes wrong.
Each session meaning that it’s incredibly expensive compared to hormone therapy which is incredibly cheap as you just pay for the drug and inject it
However it is usually doing groups therefore it is cost efficient to give lots of treatment at once to give more people the long-term benefits therefore it’s worth the cost
Where is hormone therapy costs the same each time that you use it and per person it is used on therefore if you have to give it to many people it can become quite expensive
Overall while anger management programs are more expensive than hormone therapy especially long term it’s used more cost efficiently in groups to maximize the impact of the money spent on the treatment therefore it is more efficient and better than hormone therapy

Paragraph 5 ao1
aplication
An example of Anger Management program in the UK is calm which stands for controlling anger and learning to manage it
Anger management programs as a treatment
paragraph 5 ao3
It can be using a range of situations and used by a range of different patients
including
Violent offenders, rehab, community service, prisons, normal therapy towards the general population and prescribed therapy
Unlike hormone therapy which is mainly just use a violent offenders
Anger management programs have much wider range of application from violent offenders to prescribed therapy for the general population
so it’s better than hormone therapy which is a very narrow treatment sample of just violent offenders
Anger management programs as a treatment
overall judgment
and how to make it better
Overall amps is a long-term treatment which shows participants how to control/reduce anger. with skills that last a long time
while more effective on certain individuals (i.e people with high readiness to be treated) and less effective on others who may not be focused or absorb the treatments
it may be effective to pair hormone therapy while on amps to maximize the focus and eagerness to learn and rehabilitate so the long-term effects and skills acquired by amps is more likely to be transferred to patients
so by using a combination of the two treatments it will have long-term effectiveness and patients can use coping skills and anger control and rational thinking to reduce amger urges in triggering situations
making it an effective treatment for violent offenders.
