Field Studies In Criminal Psychology Flashcards
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
examples
Fuller 1984
Godden and baddeley 1975
yuliee and cutshall 1986?????? kinda a case study tho
Fisher geiselman and amador 1989
Although this was also sought to the case study as they were real victims and Witnesses of the Crime
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
6 main points
Natural environment
IV and DV
Qualitative and quantitative data
Some degree Over Control of extraneous variables
Standardized procedure
Opportunity sample which means that the participants may be convinced that the study is real
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
natural enviroment
A natural environment in a field studying criminal psychology could include doing a stage crime in a pub or a theft in a shopping center or assult in a library
The natural environment is good strength for fields to these in criminal psychology because due to being in the participants natural environment the results and their behavior are more likely to reflect that of if the event actually occurred in real life therefore giving field studies and criminal psychology high ecological validity
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
Iv and DV
IV: weather or not a weapon is present during a staged crime
DV: accuracy of participants description of the perpetrator and or the number of participants who correctly identifyed the perpetrator from a lineup of similar people
No AO3
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
SOME CONTROLL
— internal validity only some
Some aspects of the fake crime in field studies can be controlled such as with time and the place in which the crime was committed in
However a weakness of this is not all extraneous variables can be controlled for as there is a lot going on in an actual setting and participants may not even notice the event is played out or may have been talking to somebody else and had not have realised what was going on
They also may have talked to somebody else after the event which may have changed their perception of said event(post event information)
Vista full means that field studies are more susceptible to extraneous variables affecting the internal validity of the study negatively
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
Quantitative and qualitative data
Experimenter bias +/-
Quantitative data may be for example the number of correct identifications of the perpetrator from the lineup of seven people
Qualitative data may be found for example by asking participants for a description of the criminal
+
Quantitative data can be easily and objectively analyzed
Experiments interpretation of the information is irrelevant
For example the number of people who successfully have identified the perpentrator from a lineup of seven people
This means that the experiments are effects have no effect on the validity of data increasing the internal validity of field studies as causing effect is more easily established
—
Qualitative data is highly susceptible to experiment bias and effects as often details search as the perceived accuracy of descriptions of a perpetrator may be different for different experiments meaning that the analysis would be subjective and therefore cause an effect is less easily established reducing the validity of the data in the conclusion in field studies
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
Opportunity sample participants are convinced its real
high eco real reaction
unethical psycho halm and deception
Participants will be convinced that they are witnessing a real-life crime
This means that they’re response to this crime will be realistic and there will be less demand characteristics decreasing the Eternal validity of the study and due to the response to this event being more real to life it would mean that field studies in criminal psychology have high ecological validity
This is due to the Cron seeming real therefore the consequences of the participants accuracy of their description is perceived to have real consequences on whether or not they can catch the perpetrator this may increase their accuracy and due to it being realistic therefore high ecological validity
However on the other hand due to this being their real reaction and they’re not being aware that the study and crime is fake
It is unethical because the experimenters accurately increasing the participants levels of stress and anxiety possibly causing them psychological harm and trauma from this event
It’s also an ethical because the experimenters are deceiving the participants from the true intentions of what’s going on as they are on unaware that the crime is fake
Field Studies In Criminal Psychology
Standardized procedure
Reliability + and a lil-
In criminal psychology A Field to these standardized procedure would include when the crime takes place and where the crime takes place
They would also control if and what weapon the perpetrator is carrying
And may have standardized questions for the interviewing of the participants
This therefore increases the reliability of field studies as other experimenters can repeat the method and procedure of the study for example a fake murder in a pub
The parts of the procedure such as when the attacker enters the pub and when they reveal their weapon can be repeated by another experementer
+
However it is not fully reliable
As not all of the variables and parts of the procedure can be replicated by another experimenter
For example during a fake murderer pub they are unable to replicate when the participants talk to other participants in a pub
Of some participants collapse due to the shock of seeing somebody fake dying during the fake murder
These cannot be replicated and therefore the standards procedures of field studies in criminal psychology cannot have fully high reliability
