Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Meiosis
Gametes are produced from germ cells, meiosis takes place in germ cells to generate gametes, meiosis decreases number of chromosomes
Mitosis
The devision of a parent cell into 2 daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell
Mitosis (spermatocytogenrsis)
Diploid spermatogonia (stem cells) duplicate themselves forming diploid primary spermatocytes
Meiosis 1
The primary spermatocytes divide to form 2 haploid daughter cells-spermatocytes
Meiosis 2
The secondary spermatocytes divide to produce 4 haploid daughter cells-spermatids
Spermatiogenesis
The spermatids develop into mature spermatozoa
Seroti cells
secrete nutrients for the developing spermatozoa
Leydig cells
Interstitial cells between seminiferous tubules secrete testosterone close to capillaries
Epididymis
Spermatozoa are matured & stored in the tail-continuous with the vas deferens
Vas deferens
Stores and conveys spermatozoa-expelled by peristalsis
Where are the spermatozoa produced?
In the seminiferous tubules of the testes
The hormone controlling sperm production is
FSH from the anterior pituitary
The tunica albuginea
Tough fibrous inner layer divides each testis into testicular lobules
Each lobule contains how many seminiferous tubules?
1-4
What muscle draws the testes closer to the body in response to cold?
Cremaster muscle
