Endocrine System Flashcards
ANP
Increases Na+ loss at the kidneys
ADH
Increases water reabsorption at the kidneys
Calcitonin
Produced by C cells in the thyroid gland lowers calcium and phosphate levels in the blood by reducing amount released from bone and increasing amount secreted by kidneys
Parathyroid hormone
Increases plasma calcium
Posterior pituitary
Secretes oxytocin and ADH, hormones travel down axons into secretory vesicles
Anterior pituitary
Enclosed by a capsule of collage nous connective tissue surrounded by thin walled bold vessels secretes 6 hormones TSH, PRL, ACTH, LH, FSH, GH
Steroid hormones
Aldosterone, cortisone, oestrogen and testosterone
Pancreas secretes
Insulin and glucagon
Kidney secretes
EPO and renin
Lipid hormones (steroid & thyroid)
Travel attached to protein (don’t like water) Cross the cell membrane and attach to receptor in cytoplasm
Glucagon
Stimulates liver to breakdown glycogen to secrete glucose into blood when blood glucose levels low
Endocrine system create
Slow, long acting responses
Adrenal cortex
Outer of adrenal gland secretes cortisol and aldosterone
Adrenal medulla
Middle of adrenal cortex secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline
