Male Genitourinary Flashcards
Syphilitic Chancre
Begins with 2-4 weeks of infections, as a small solitary silvery papule that erode to a red, round, or oval superficial ulcer with a serious discharge.
Cryptochidism
Testes have never descended.
Epididymis
Main storage os sperm, a markedly coiled duct system. Comma shaped, curved over the top and posterior surface of the testis.
Epispadias
Meatus opens on the dorsal (upper) side of glans or shaft above a broad, spade like penis.
Scrotal Hernia
Usually due to indirect inguinal hernia. Involves swelling and pain with straining.
Herpes
HSV2 infection. Clusters of small vesicles with surrounding erythema, which are often painful, erupt on glans or foreskin. Initial infection lasts 7-10 days and the virus remains dormant indefinitely.
Hydrocele
cystic, circumscribed collection of fluid in tunica vaginalis, surrounding testis.
Hypospadius
Urethral meatus opens on the ventral (under) side of the glans, shaft, or at the penoscrotal junction. A congenital defect.
Orchitis
Acute inflammation of testis, most common cause is mumps.
Paraphimosis
Foreskin is retracted and fixed. Once retracted behind glans, a tight or inflamed foreskin cannot return to its original position.
Phimosis
Non-retractable foreskin forming a pointy tip with a tiny orifice. May be congenital or acquired from adhesions 2* to infection.
Testicular Torsion
Sudden twisting of spermatic cord. Occurs in late adolescence, rare after 20 yrs old. Excruciating pain in testicle of sudden onset. Often during sleep or following trauma. May also have lower abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Glans
Tip of the penis.
Frenulum
Fold of the foreskin extending from the urethral meatus, ventrally.
Prenatal Testis Development
Develop in abdominal cavity near kidneys. Later they migrate and push the abdominal wall in front of them, dragging the vas deferens, blood vessels, and nerves behind. They descend along inguinal canal before birth.
