1* & 2* Skin Lesions Flashcards
Patch
Macula that are >1cm, ex: Mongolian spot, café au lait spot.
Macule
Just a color change, flat, <1cm, ex: freckles.
Papule
Something to can feel (solid, elevated) <1cm, caused by superficial thickening of epidermis, ex: mole.
Plaque
Papules coalesce to form surface elevation >1cm. A plateau-like, disk-shaped lesion. Ex: psoriasis.
Nodule
Solid, elevated, hard or soft, >1cm. Go deeper into dermis than papule.
Tumor
> a few cm in diameter, firm or soft, deeper into dermis; can be benign or malignant. Ex: hemangioma.
Wheal
Superficial, raised, and red; slightly irregular shaped due to edema, ex: mosquito bite.
Vesicle
Elevated cavity w/ free fluid, up to 1cm, clear serum flows if erupted. Ex: herpes simplex, early varicella, herpes zoster.
Bulla
> 1cm, superficial in epidermis, is thin walled so it ruptures easily. Ex: burn, friction blister.
Cyst
Encapsulated fluid-filled cavity in dermis or subcutaneous layer, tensely elevating skin. Ex: sebaceous cyst.
Pustule
Pus in the cavity. Circumscribed and elevated. Ex: acne.
Crust
Scab. Thickened, dried-out exudate left when vesicles/pustules burst or dry up. Color can be red-brown, honey, or yellow depending on ingredients (blood, serum, pus). Ex: impetigo.
Scale
Compact, desiccated flakes of skin from shedding of dead excess keratin cells. Ex: eczema.
Fissure
Linear crack w/ abrupt edges, extends into dermis, dry or moist. Ex: cracks @ corners of mouth from excess moisture.
Erosion
Scooped out but shallow depression. Superficial; epidermis lost; moist but no bleeding; heals w/out scar b/c erosion does not extend into dermis.
Ulcer
Deeper depression extending into dermis, irregular shape; may bleed, leaves scar.
Excoriation
Self-inflicted scratches from intense itching.
Scar
After lesion is repaired, normal tissue is lost and replaced w/ connective tissue. A permanent fibrotic change.
Atrophic Scar
Skin level is depressed w/ loss of tissue; a thinning of the epidermis. Ex: striae.
Lichenification
Thicker patch of skin from prolonged scratching. Aiden’s ankles & wrists b/c of long term eczema.
Keloid
Hypertrophic scar. Skin level is elevated by excess scar tissue.
