Male anatomy histology Flashcards
What part of the excurrent duct system is this?
- the vas deferens - contains inner circular muscle and outer longitudinal muscle
What are the two types of tissue found in the body of the penis
Corpus cavernousa which is paired
Corpus spongiosum - which surrounds the urethra
What tissue surrounds the urethra in the body of the penis
Corpus spongiosum
Will immature or mature sperm be travelling Through the tail of the epididymis
Mature sperm develops in the tail of the epididymis
In the head of the epididymis, will the sperm be mature and fertile?
No, it becomes mature in the tail of the epididymis
What will you find in the spermatic cord?
- vas deferens
- pampiniform plexus
- cremaster muscle
What are these layers of the testes inside
- green is rete testes
- blue is the parenchyma / seminiferous tubules
- purple is the epididymis head
What is this structure?
The spermatic cord - contains highly coiled testicular artery and highly branched testicular vein
What is this structure?
The epididymis - long single tube
- lumen becomes wider as it progresses and lining epithelial cells become shorter
What layer of the testes is this?
Tunica albuginea
- collagenous capsule, light pink staining
- surrounded by visceral layer of tunica vaginalis
- can see smooth muscle cells (arrows)
What is this tissue layer surrounding seminiferous tubules? What cells are contained in this space?
This is tunica propria, and the leydig cells are contained in this space. Leydig cells are responsible for hormones
What are these cells seen in the interstitial space and what do they produce? Are they endocrine or exocrine cells
These are leydig cells and produce testosterone
they are endocrine so highly vascularised
What is this structure? How can we tell it apart from epididymis for example?
The efferent ducts - have scalloped epithelium unlike epididymis which have smooth and even epithelium
Sperm development cells
Green = spermatogonia Blue = Sertoli cells Pink = primary spermatocytes - have large round nuclei and are largest cells
Sperm development cells: identify the following cells
Blue = sertoli Spermatids = yellow - spermatids have very condensed and round nucleus, and located more toward lumen of tubule Green = spermatogonia Black = spermatozoa
