How should malaria be treated?

A

Depends on species:

  • P. falciparum= malignant
    • Artesunate
    • Quinine + doxycycline
  • P. vivax, ovale, malariae= benign
    • Chloroquine
    • Dormant hypnozoites (liver)
      • Can recur months later
        • –>Give additional primaquine
