Transmission
A
By the bite of the female anopheline mosquito

Life cycle
A
- during blood emal, female inocluates sporozites into human host
- sporozites infect liver cells and mature into schiznots which rupture and release merozited
- can remain dormant in liver cells
- asexual multiplication in erythrocytes

Clinical features
A
classical cyclical (cold, hot stage, sweats)
- rigors
- headache
- myalgia
- diarrhoea and vomitting

Treatment of benign malaria
A
not life threatening and is treated as outpatients with chloroquine for 3 days followed by primaquine for two weeks (to eradicate liver cells)

Diagnosis
A
- what type ? - thin film
- thick film - most sensitive, requires expertise
- rapid antigen test
- Blood cultures
- PCR
- urine and stool cultures
- HIV test

Treatment of P falciparum
A
- oral or intravenous quinine

Complications of falicparum malaria
A
- cerebral malaria
- haemolytic anaemia
- metabolic acidsis
- hypoglycaemia
- acute renal failure
- pulmonary oedema
