malaria Flashcards
is malaria a communicable or non-communicable disease?
malaria is a communicable disease (spread by pathogens)
what does the malaria pathogen consist of?
bacteria/virus/fungi/protist
a protist
symptoms of malaria
experiencing repeated bouts of fever
malaria can be fatal
a protist means that
it can’t be passed directly from one person to another
describe fully how malaria is spread
first the infected person is bitten by a mosquito.
The malaria pathogen passes into the mosquito
the mosquito now bites a different person and passes the malaria pathogen to them
what do scientists call the mosquito that spreads the malaria pathogen?
a vector, because it carries the pathogen from one person to another person
what are the 2 main ways to stop the spread of malaria
stopping the vector (mosquito) from breeding by finding areas of still water and draining them
or spraying areas of still water with insecticide which kills the mosquitos
stopping the mosquitos from biting humans by sleeping under a mosquito net( can also spray the net with insecticide)
where do mosquitos breed and how can we stop this
they breed in still water. to stop mosquitos from breeding, we need to find areas of still water and drain them
it is impossible to kill all mosquitos
so instead, what is easier than killing all of them
preventing mosquitos from biting humans by sleeping under a mosquito net, the mosquitos can’t get thru the net so they can’t bite anyone
spraying the net with insecticide also means that any mosquitos that land on it are also killed
