infectious diseases in plants Flashcards
what are the 2 infectious diseases in plants that we study called?
The viral disease tobacco mosaic virus
the fungal disease rose blackspot
what is tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)
TMV is a very widespread plant infection. TMV infects a number of different plant species including tomatoes
plant symptoms of TMV:
causes the leaves to discolour in a MOSAIC pattern
what is process reduced when a plant is infected with tobacco mosaic virus?
why?
photosynthesis is reduced
TMV causes plants to discolour in a mosaic pattern, this discolouration leads to the rate of photosynthesis being reduced
why can the growth of a plant be reduced when it’s infected with tobacco mosaic virus ?
tmv causes the plant to discolour in a mosaic pattern meaning the rate of photosynthesis is reduced, this also means the growth is reduced as plants need photosynthesis to grow
what is rose black spit caused by?
a fungus
what are the symptoms of the rose black spot disease
causes the leaves to develop purple or black spots
the leaves then often turn yellow and fall off
causes rate of photosynthesis to fall and this reduces the rate of growth
what can rose black spot fungus be spread by?
water or wind
what are the 2 ways to treat rose black spot?
- we can spray the plants with chemicals which kill fungi (fungicides)
- we can remove the infected leaves and destroy them
